On April the 10th 2004 we discovered a muskrat somewhere in a polder in the Netherlands.
The muskrat seemed to have a hole in the ditch bank. As we were sitting in the car, we could look at the muskrat for a long
time. Below you can find a number of pictures which describes his activities.

1 The muskrat is looking around for danger
The exit and entrance of the hole are under the waterline. The muskrat submerges close to the entrance of its hole and
first looks around for danger before taking action (picture 1).

2 Muskrat swimming in the water
When the coast is clear the muskrat swims trough the ditch to the other shore (picture 2)

3 Muskrat eating
The muskrat climbs on the other shore and starts to eat from the grass. (picture 3 and 4)

Muskrats dig holes which they decorate with grass and reed. The muskrat that we saw was busy building such a hole. On
picture 5 the muskrat is getting grass on the shore.

The muskrat collects a huge amount of grass in his mouth. (picture 6 and 7)

Next the muskrat swims with all the grass in its mouths towards its hole. (picture 8 and 9)

Close to its hole the muskrat dives with all the grass to the entrance of its hole.
