Svalbard part 21

1 August 2003:
Today was another fieldwork day on the program so we left early in the morning to our field site. The weather was very nice with lots sun and not so much wind. First we stopped at Isdammen to look at the Barnacle Goose over there. The geese are gathering together before they take off for their migration to the south. The group was quite large now, at least a couple of hundred geese. In the picture you can see part of the group.

After our stop we began our fieldwork. We were checked out again by some impressive male reindeer. They were very curious and came right up to us to see what we were doing.

During our lunch break we decided to drive up to Mine 7 with the car. After navigating a lot of sharp turns we reached the top of the mountain. Up there we saw a mother reindeer with her fawn of this year. This time they weren't very shy so we could approach them to take some pictures. Maybe they were less shy because the younger reindeer was getting quite big by now.

On the way back we discovered a female Svalbard Ptarmigan with 8 chicks. They were still very small. They had many spots on their feathers so they were very well camouflaged. Afterwards we finished our fieldwork.
